In 1990, Dr. Armando Valdez left academia to establish an applied research practice devoted to exploring new approaches for reaching low-income, language minorities and other hard-to-reach populations. Dr. Valdez is a behavioral scientist and experienced research manager specializing in health communications and patient education. The fusion of behavioral theory with health communications and interactive technology in the design of patient education interventions is emblematic of his work. He operated initially as a communication consulting practice as Valdez & Associates and evolved into the current communication research and development firm. Over the years, the firm has developed a robust portfolio of socially meaningful projects for diverse populations, often in multiple languages—including English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Hmong—that address cancer education, nutrition education, parenting, childhood obesity, foster care, elder abuse awareness, violence prevention, drug abuse prevention, telecommunication access, environmental awareness, and cultural competency.
